How Family Promise Helps Families Rebuild Their Lives

Across the United States, more than half a million people are experiencing homelessness — and many of them are parents and children who never expected to be in that position. Job loss, medical issues, and unexpected life changes can push families into crisis faster than most people realize.

The video above tells the stories of two mothers who faced that reality. One lost her job after five years when her company suddenly closed. Another, a military veteran, suffered a severe knee injury that left her unable to work. Both families ended up without stable housing and were unsure where to turn next.

Where Family Promise Steps In

Family Promise offers something rare in the world of emergency shelter: dignity, stability, and a path forward. With 6,000 congregations across 180 cities, the organization brings together different faith communities to provide temporary shelter, meals, and real support for families trying to get back on their feet.

Congregations convert classrooms into bedrooms using rolling beds, provide meals, and create a safe space for families to stay together — something many traditional shelters can’t offer.

But Family Promise doesn’t stop at shelter. Each family receives:

  • Job counseling
  • Financial coaching
  • Ongoing support is designed to help them secure permanent housing

It works. 82% of families in the program find stable housing within nine weeks.

A Second Chance — and a Way to Pay It Forward

The families featured in the video rebuilt their lives with the help of Family Promise. Today, they’re back on their feet — working, stable, and now helping other families through the same program that supported them.

Our message is simple: never quit. Life can knock you down, but what matters is how you rise.
